‘Mr. Ed’ as I knew him was always a great mentor to me as a lawyer. He was always happy to ponder the complex issues I brought to him for guidance, and was such a pleasure to have onboard our boat when he came for his annual sail. Ed's passing is certainly sad news for Hagersville and all of Haldimand County. Ed was widely respected, very community minded, a wonderful lawyer and person in all respects, a staunch Liberal party supporter, and a great personal friend. We are all better off for having known Ed and having him in our midst. It is difficult to think of this community without Ed in it. His impact on the community was significant and long lasting. I have so many good memories of our business and personal interactions over the last 50 years. He will be missed by all. I would like to extend my most sincere condolences to Christie, Sheri, and Candy on your loss.

I was so appreciative of Christie's phone call late yesterday, to let me know her father had passed. I think I knew Ed pretty much all my life. But because of our age difference we were never in the same school at the same time. I do have a very distinct memory of Ed when I was about 10 years old. He had set up shop in miserable little shack on the banks of the creek at Woodlawn. He was studying for the bar exam and wanted no distractions. It must have worked, because shortly after being called to the bar, he joined my father's practice - becoming a trusted and valued partner.
Ed was a pillar in the community - seemingly being everywhere, involved in everything. I mean, who wouldn't be drawn to that great booming voice? You always knew when Ed was in the room - and that was a good thing. His passing leaves a big void in Hagersville. He will be deeply missed.

First, our family’s condolences to Ed’s family. Ed was a stellar member of our group cycling club that travelled to Europe many times over the years. Although the senior member of our group he kept up with all of us on our daily trips. He did fall once or twice and taught us a few new words as he dusted himself off with a smile on his face. In the evenings, Ed regaled us with several booming renditions of Johnny Cash’s top ten list. A true friend and a gentleman who will be dearly missed.

Saddened to learn of Ed’s recent passing. Recalling happy times on Lake Vernon many years ago - especially his “Teaching/Dogma” lesson - which was jokingly mentioned each time we happened to meet up thereafter. Sincere condolences to Ed’s loved ones and multitude of friends who will be missing him dearly.
R.I.P. old friend!

would sing in his beautiful booming voice, long time volunteer at Ruthven Park National Historic Site in Cayuga,

This is a sad event for Ed's family and they have our deepest condolences - its also a tremendous loss to our Haldimand Community, and to the local legal community, of which Ed was a defining feature for decades. Ed was known for his hard work and dedication to his clients, and for his integrity as a lawyer. I will miss his deep Radio Voice and attendance at local events, where we would often shoot the breeze and catch up on legal matters. Ed - you did good. You will be missed by more people than you can ever know.

To Ed's family and Candy ... We are so sad to have lost Ed's presence among us, and we sure were better for it. He was a very fine gentleman, and truly one-of-a-kind. He fiercely loved and protected our Community and everyone in it. He was much loved and respected by his family, friends, neighbours and everyone who knew him. We sure will miss his "big booming voice" at Good Friday Mass at St. Mary's. Nobody read that long, long, LONG reading like Ed, who after so MANY years of doing it, practically knew it by heart. He was very active in our St. Mary's/St. Ann's Parish. A wonderful trusted lawyer, and an even more amazing man. He sure will be missed. GodSpeed Ed. Mark,Velvette, Kennedy, Jackson & Victoria Magee

Ed McCarthy lived a full and spirited life and will forever be known for his community dedication and his reputation as a lawyer. Today though, we will remember the many years that Ed was part of our family. We are grateful for the shared laughter, the animated political discussions, his big and boisterous personality, that booming voice and his infectious laughter. We can only imagine that wherever he is now, the room is just a wee bit brighter. May he rest in peace.

I was shocked and saddened to learn, just an hour ago, that Ed McCarthy has left us. We went to Hagersville High at the same time. I was a year of two ahead of Ed, so we were more acquaintances than co-conspirators. That big booming voice so many have remarked on? Well, it already echoed off the walls by the time Ed reached high school, amplifying his irrepressible wit. I still have my old yearbook from HHS. Ed appeared prominently throughout, and he hadn’t even peaked yet. My late mother, Lee Gaunt, also an accomplished lawyer, always spoke highly of Ed and admired his knowledge and professionalism. My family had occasion to benefit personally from Ed’s outstanding resourcefulness. He skillfully combined the finer points of law with his multi-generational knowledge of the community, to resolve a property encumbrance that had eluded efforts by other legal professionals to untangle. Ed was rightly proud of his accomplishment, and I truly believe that no one else, in or out of Haldimand, could have accomplished what he did. I was hoping that Ed would find time in his retirement to add to his meticulously researched and pertinent essays on early days in Haldimand and the Haldimand Tract. He was a voice of integrity, speaking with authority through knowledge, in a strident maelstrom of uninformed opinion and “fiction as fact”. Ed was one of a kind. Rest in peace.
